The starting hourly rate for probationary part time personnel is $7.25 per hour for untrained, in-district candidates and $10.25 per hour for probationary candidates that have completed either Firefighter I or EMT – Basic. After a one year probationary period, and certification as a Firefighter I and/or EMT, the hourly rate increases to $17.50 per hour base rate. If previously certified, the hourly rate will take effect after an orientation period. Additional hourly incentives are offered to personnel who either advance EMS levels or get promoted to a company officer.

The hourly standby rate for part-time personnel is $7.25 per hour for weekday coverage and $10.25 for weekend coverage.  Calls are paid at the paid-on-call rate.

BENEFITS

Part-time and paid-on-call personnel are offered a competitive hourly rate, participation in the Wisconsin Retirement System (if hourly requirements are met), paid educational opportunities, and access to the fire station’s workout facilities.

TIME COMMITMENT

Staying proficient and a Firefighter/EMT requires significant time and dedication to keep skills sharp, therefore, personnel are required to attend a specified number of training hours annually.  There are also skill requirements for both firefighters and EMTs which must be met on a yearly basis.  Pool EMTs must also work a minimum of 24 hours per month on the EMS schedule, which scheduled EMT’s work about 72 hours a month.

TRAINING PROGRAM

For new Firefighter/EMTs, the training begins with courses taken at an approved Wisconsin Technical College.

Firefighters will be enrolled in the Firefighter I course which is approximately 128 hours.  The course instructs the student in the basics of firefighting and provides the opportunity to demonstrate and practice the basic skills.  The course is approximately 40% classroom instruction and 60% hands-on practical skill application.

EMTs will be enrolled in the EMT course which is approximately 180 hours.  The course gives students the skills to assess and manager a variety of medical illnesses and traumatic injuries, CPR, airway management, bleeding and shock, emergency childbirth, and automatic external defibrillation are just a few of the topics covered.  The course is approximately 160 hours in a classroom setting, and 20 hours of clinical experience at area hospitals.

For both courses there are written and practical examinations that must be passed before a certification or license can be obtained.
